RAF Wartling Rotor Radar

Visited July 2007 with Monk, Jackal and Reef



RAF Wartling was an R3 Ground Control Intercept Rotor Radar Station.
It purpose was to detect incoming enemy aircraft and relay this information to fighter command at Bentley Priory, and deploy aircraft to intercept the enemy.

Wartling became operational in 1941 and by 1947 was one of the only remaining GCI's.
During the 1950's, the site was redeveloped and GCI Wartling was rebuilt as a 2 level underground structure to be able to stand upto the new threat of the Atomic bomb.

Wartling is now a complete mess, having be completely flooded upto it roof below ground. The interior is rotton and rusted.
Some features are recognisable but was still interesting to be able to see it.
For comparison please see my page on RAF Holmpton, which is very similar to Wartling, but Holmpton is kept as a museum.
