Visited January 2007 with Zero and Lost
Built in 1901 and opened in 1903 in Hellingly a small village in East Sussex and finally closing its doors in 1994. A nice looking asylum although has been subjected to various arson attacks and mindless vandalism, which has only lead to the increase in the buildings deteriation and security presence.
The main hall (pictured) has suffered severall fires which has left a few large holes in the wooden flooring. The stage has also be burnt leaving a thick covering of ash and dust on the ceiling above the stage.
After seeing the main hall we went to climb the water tower. The stairs were in very poor condition, many steps were missing and those that were left were slowly giving way under weight. A few more flights up and the stairs became unusable, having to rely on a small ledge of bricks and the old metal water tank to get to the top and one slip would lead to a very long drop straight down.
Out onto the roof and you are hit with a fantastic view of East Sussex, a few quick snaps and it was time to make it back down. Now it was time to do some wondering around, being careful not to fall through the rotting floor boards. Visited several wards, the kitchen, laundry and Admin.
On leaving security were doing there regular patrol, and we were caught. It was a good trip but there is plenty more to see.
