Farliegh Down Tunnel

Visited October 2007 with Rookinella

Farleigh Down Tunnel is situated just off the main railway line from London to Bath.
Trains laden with ammunition to be stored at Monkton Farliegh would stop here. Transfer their cargo into smaller trucks that were situated on a raised platform at the sidings and lowered into the tunnel via a slope shaft. The trucks descent and ascent was controlled by an overhead ropeway.

Once down the slope, the trucks would pass through blast doors, and a few small rooms which would have housed toielts, canteen, switchgear for power and controls for the conveyors.
The trucks would have been stopped in sidings in the tunnel and the ammunition unloaded onto conveyors which would have hauled it up hill for 1.5miles upto Monkton farliegh central ammunition depot,and joined on the Main West shaft where at the other end men would have either unloaded it into its bays for storage, or transferred it to another conveyor system to be stored further away inside the depot.

We walked all the way till the end of the tunnel, where it is bricked up to block access to the area of monkton farleigh now owned by Wansdyke. I hope to return at a later date to get more pictures to replace the ones that came out a bit blurry.
