Eastry Chalk Mine

Visited January 2009 with Ali23 and Nik24

These caves are in private property under someones house and not open to the public.

You enter the caves through a small hatch in the ground and down a tight stairway.
I was expecting a series of small rooms but these were quite extensive tunnels spread over 3 levels.

Dug originally do extract chalk to make lime in the 1800's.
Other uses over the years have been to hold local festival in the mine and as a shelter in the second world war.

The mine also has a few paintings on the chalk walls.
