Visited July 2008 with an organised tour
The site is owned by Sussex Police and the visit was part of an Organised Tour.
Living nearby and having driven across Ashdown Forest hundreds of times before i have always wanted to see what was wit in the enclosure known as Kingstandings.
The site was orignally built for the Political warfare Executive for World War 2, to broadcast 'black propaganda' using the worlds most powerful transmitter that was purchased from America.
The transmitter was known as Aspiditra.
The site consisted of an underground bunker and surrounding buildings with upto 35 aerials transmitting and recieving information.
German attack orders for the Lutwaffe were intercepted using the facilities at Kingstanding giving us time to prepare for the attack, the transmitters also allowed us to block out german radio signals and transmit our own commands confusing the German army. The transmitter could be controlled by the Air Ministry in London. Its first broadcast was on the 8th November 1942.
After the war, the site was used by the Diplomatical Wireless Service, and by the BBC to transmit its World Service.
In 1984 the bunker was stripped out, extended underground and upgraded for the threat of nuclear war and to replace the former RGHQ at Dover.
It is now currently owned and used by Sussex Police for training.
