Cane Hill Lunatic Asylum - Demolition

Visited 2008-2009 with The Riddlers, Lillimouse, Disco Kitten, Site, Zero and many others.

Since English Partnerships acquired the Cane Hill site it was only a matter of time before demolition would happen.
But its been a fair few years of arguing over what to do with the site, housing or business, to use the current buildings or completely demolish and start again.
Personally it would have been great for all the buildings to be kept and converted, but so mnay were such a poor state from arson, slate and lead thieves and vandals that most buildings were beyond repair.
Only the chapel and administration building are listed and are to be saved. The water tower luckily has been saved now due to local pressure to keep it as a landmark.

The admin building has now been demolished since it was discovered that the building was now beyond repair after the SAS were allowed in to test explosives.

The demolition crew are quickly clearing the site of undergrowth and have already begun knocking down the interconnecting corridors between the main buildings.
The bricks and slate roof tiles are being salvaged to hopefully be reused in any new buildings on the site. Everything else will be gone. The patients belongings, medical records, drug trolleys , beds, furniture, paintings , therapy equipement all of which is still inside, will be destroyed.

Seeing these items left from when the hospital closed reminds you of its past. David Bowies brother and Charlie Chaplains Mother were both patients at Cane Hill Mental Asylum.

Not many original pictures exist of Cane Hill when it is open, so it is down to Urban Explorers to photograph and record whats there now, so there are at least some pictures before its completely gone.


A trip in early December with The Riddlers, Fiendicus and LulataHula , all tiling from the roofs and tiles of building facades had been removed causing major water damage to all wards.
All corridors had been demolished leaving only wards left, meaning to explore each ward you had to go out into the open.
The area around the chapel had been demolished including the dentists and the library.
The remains of the main hall have also gone.
